Music Ministry

AGO Organ Event:  Sunday, March 31st, 2019, 7:30-8:30 p.m.  Members Organ Recital, Potomac Chapter of the American Guild of Organists.  Organists from the AGO perform in recital on the Messiah Lutheran Church Flentrop Organ.  Program includes a selection for organ and instruments with the Messiah Lutheran Church Parish Orchestra. Concert in collaboration with the Messiah Lutheran Church Music Program. Reception follows.

Messiah Lutheran Church Choir — The choir assists in leading during the worship service singing the Service Music, Hymns, Psalms and Canticles.  Anthems are sung that reflect upon the Scripture readings appointed and the Liturgical Calendar.  The choir sings at the Sunday 10:30 a.m. Divine Service from September to June and at services for Advent, Christmas, Lent, Holy Week and Thanksgiving.  Rehearsals for choir members are Wednesday evenings from 7:30-9:00 p.m. Membership is open to all ages.

Messiah Lutheran Church Orchestra — This parish instrumental ensemble was formed in August 2016 to play at services.  Rehearsals are on Sunday’s from 12:30-1:30 p.m.  September through June.  Auditions are open for all instrumentalists.  The ensemble is currently composed of 3 violins, 2 violas, violoncello, guitar basso continuo, bass guitar basso continuo, trumpet and organ.  Repertoire includes hymns, service music, anthem accompaniments, selections from Bach Cantatas, Handel Oratorios, Handel Organ Concertos and includes instrumental music of Bach, Handel, Mozart, Purcell and Vivaldi.

Ronald Butts-Boehmer, CAGO

Director of Music

Ronald Butts-Boehmer is the Director of Music and Organist at Messiah Lutheran Church.  He began his piano musical studies in Dallas with Lois Nielson and is the winner of seven piano competitions.  His orchestral debut was at age fifteen performing Saint-Saëns Piano Concerto No. 2.  He is a graduate in Orchestral Conducting from the Italian State Conservatory of Music in Salerno.  He has participated in organ masterclasses in France, Italy and USA.  Organ Performance studies were at the University of North Texas with Jesse Eschbach and Marie-Madeleine Duruflé-Chevalier.

He has served as Music Director at churches in Florida, Texas, Virginia and in Italy.  He has served as Music Director of the Choral Scholars of Naples since 2000, presenting a concert series, annual performances of Handel’s Messiah, performances of oratorios, major choral and orchestra works in collaboration with international musicians and the Orchestra Alessandro Scarlatti.  In 2002 he presented the Italian premiere of the Duruflé Messe Cum Jubilo.  In 2008 he was Maestro Collaboratore at Teatro San Carlo, Naples.  He is a US Navy Veteran, graduating from the US Armed Forces School of Music and served overseas in the NATO Band.  He has performed in concerts in Europe and USA with RAI Television broadcasts, served as jury member of music competetions and a was a classical music radio announcer for WRR 101.1.  Currently he teaches piano in Germantown.  Member of AAM, RSCM, NMTA, Dual AGO-NPM Colleague  Certification from the American Guild of Organists and currently serves as Board Member of the NOVA AGO Chapter.
